Wayne Shelnutt stands on the burned remains of his home on Mohawk Circle in the Sagamore subdivision of Superior on Monday, Jan. 10, 2022. The entire subdivision was destroyed by the Dec. 30 Marshall fire, which he, his daughter and 7-months-pregnant wife had only minutes to evacuate. Wayne also ran a popular local barbecue restaurant, which didn’t burn but was struggling. “We’ve been building momentum for nine years and we’ve organically just been busier year after year,” Wayne said about the restaurant. The family was living at a hotel as they hunted for a new rental house. The fire has made him rethink his future home's location and how that home is built.
